The national eco initiative Old Paper for New Book got a great start thanks to the children of Bourgas and Haskovo. On the 7th of September, 1,200 kids from the sea town joined the campaign organized by ECOPACK Bulgaria and Greenwich Book Center, held in Primorski Park, in front of the Pantheon. They handed over for recycling 7.4 t of paper, got 1,550 new books as presents and saved more than 96 trees from felling.
On the next day even more young eco activists from Haskovo took part in the race. On their own City Day, September 8th, 1,325 children collected a total of 7.6 t of used paper, received 1,760 new books, and saved 99 trees from felling. In both cities the campaign took place with the support of the municipalities and the regional libraries.
The organizers of Old Paper for New Book, Mariana Petkova from ECOPACK Bulgaria and Viktoria Biserova, Manager of Greenwich Book Center, thanked all the children whose involvement in the initiative helps further the cause of living in a cleaner world, but also proves that they love books and are eager to explore the amazing stories hidden between their covers.
Under the motto “Clean Up and Read Up”, the events took place with much music, dancing and themed games whose main goal was to convince the kids that taking care of nature and reading books is not just useful, but also really fun. The children were given the chance to turn into fairy-tale characters of the travelling giant book of the campaign and to win the sequel story, To Catch an Island, by playing in quiz competitions. Both books have been designed by a student from the National Academy of Art and were presented by ECOPACK Bulgaria.
Other games challenged the children to show what they know about recycling, separate waste collection and ecology, as well as about the mascots of this year’s campaign – Agatha and Larry, the characters from Steve Stevenson’s popular series published by FYUT Publishing House.
The national eco initiative Old Paper for New Book will proceed with events in Sofia on September 15th, Russe on September 28th, and Veliko Turnovo on September 29th.
