8,350 children from across the country aged 4 to 8 have already embraced the idea of separate collection of packaging waste thanks to the efforts of Ecopack Bulgaria. For five years already, through the educational puppet show “A Tale of Brave Little Empty-Bellied Heroes”, the largest waste management organization has been teaching children a responsible attitude to nature.
This year the spring tour of “A Tale of Brave Little Empty-Bellied Heroes” covered 9 cities in partnership with the municipalities of Botevgrad, Svoge, Tutrakan, Pleven, Pravets, Panagyurishte, Teteven, Peshtera, and Strelcha. It achieved record-high attendance, teaching 2,650 children from kindergartens and elementary schools. In a manner and language accessible to children, the show raises the issue of the responsibility of each inhabitant of the Earth for the protection of nature. This is part of the mission of Ecopack Bulgaria – to educate the young so that the message can be passed on to the adults. Because it is the belief at Ecopack Bulgaria that “children are the best ambassadors of the green idea and often help form good habits among adults.”
The puppet show characters Hartoyad, Plastoyadka, and Stukloyad told the children how they should collect waste in order to keep the planet clean. They learned that the waste that goes to landfills pollute the environment while those that are collected separately are recycled and then brought to new life.
The show also teaches the children what type of waste goes in each color-coded container.
All of the children danced, took part in waste sorting competitions, and in the end received gifts – coloring books and magnets with the three characters.
This year the campaign had three faces – Cathy (aged 4), Kaloyan (aged 8) and Nia (aged 9) from Sofia. In text and images Ecopack Bulgaria presented their true stories – how they have been taking care of nature since meeting Hartoyad, Plastoyadka, and Stukloyad.
