The Minister of Environment and Water declared as achieved the packaging waste recycling and recovery targets of the members of ECOPACK Bulgaria for 2018 by Decree № РД- 386/15.05.2019.
ECOPACK Bulgaria has been the leader among recovery organizations in this country for 15 years, with a market share of 42.22%.
In 2018, 1,189 companies put their trust in ECOPACK Bulgaria which, on their behalf, collected and handed over for recycling 109,959.07 t of packaging waste, of which 18,003.87 t plastic, 46,667.42 t paper and cardboard, 24,103.23 t of glass, 5,064.86 t of metal, and 7,079.41 t of timber.
The total amount recovered constitutes 60.69%, and the amount recycled constitutes 60.68% of the reported 166,370.95 tons of packaging released in the Bulgarian market, with 60% recovery target and 55% recycling target set by law.
In 2018, the company has concluded contracts with 83 municipalities to set up and manage spate packaging waste collection systems, which cover a population of 2,571,508, served by 15,763 color-coded containers with total volume of 21,586,520 liters. According to the Decree by the Minister of Environment and Water, the extent to which targets have been met by ECOPACK Bulgaria exceeds the requirements set by the Ordinance on Packaging and Packaging Waste. The number of companies whose recycling obligations were met by ECOPACK was 1,189.
The environmental impact of the recycled materials is:
• 606,600 trees saved from felling.
• Natural resources saved:
- 320,964.286 m kWh of electric power;
- 1,483.090 billion liters of drinking water;
- 152,676 barrels of petroleum.
• The volume of landfill waste reduced by more than 419,787 cub m.
