On April 10th, the National Palace of Culture (NDK) hosted a special event to launch the campaign “re: NDK Recycle! It’s culture”. The opening event was attended by EU Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Karmenu Vella, Minister of Environment and Water, Neno Dimov, Deputy Minister of Culture, Rumen Dimitrov, Todor Bourgoudjiev, Executive Director of ECOPACK Bulgaria, and other officials.
The concept for the campaign was developed by the NDK team and ties in with the MOEW idea for all meetings and events within Bulgaria’s Presidency to take place under the “No Plastic Products” motto.
“re: NDK Recycle! It’s culture” will include a variety of activities at the National Palace of Culture and the Varna Festival and Congress Center. NDK is a major cultural center in this country, with more than 1 million visitors a year. The goal is, by the means of art, to provoke NDK visitors to think about plastic waste, its slow decomposition, and the need to recycle it; to stimulate more active citizen commitment for higher awareness and a change in consumer behavior.
Within the campaign and the informal meeting of the Environment Council today, three art installations were presented, which have been made of recycled plastic collected on the premises of NDK. The installations are entitled Tree of Life, Everything Flows, and Blue Planet, and are displayed at different locations in the NDK building.
The campaign entitled “re: NDK Recycle! It’s culture” was launched in the beginning of the year when more than 86 waste bins and 25 containers for separate packaging waste collection provided free of charge by ECOPACK were installed on the premises of NDK. In addition, during the refurbishment of ND, more than 15,000 electric light bulbs were replaced with energy-saving ones.
ECOPACK Bulgaria is a partner to the “re: NDK Recycle! It’s culture” campaign together with the Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Environment and Water, the Green Sofia Program of Sofia Municipality, and the NoWaste Clean Environment Initiative.
