Kyustendil Municipality won the 2017 edition of the Greenest Municipality competition organized by ECOPACK Bulgaria. The awarded project in the medium-sized municipality category concerns a public awareness campaign targeting the residents of Kyustendil Municipality. It aims to improve awareness and understanding of the benefits of separate collection of packaging waste, its subsequent recovery and reuse, and the ensuing gains for the individual households. Accordingly, the message of the Municipality to the citizens is “You paid for it! Use it!”. The campaign will start with information printed on the back of tax notices. In the space of one year, the municipal administration will organize meetings with local residents and homeowner representatives. There are plans to include, on a pilot basis, the apartment buildings that have received non-reimbursable financial aid under the National Multifamily Housing Energy Efficiency Program in OP “Regions in Growth” 2014-2020, as well. Theft-protected containers for separate collection of packaging waste will be located next to the buildings that have undergone energy efficiency improvements. Information boards will be put up in the entrances of the apartment buildings.
In 2017, the Greenest Municipality competition organized by ECOPACK Bulgaria included 19 participating municipalities divided into three categories – small, medium-sized, and large municipality. Applicant projects were expected to meet criteria such as creativity, scalability, good practices, and effectiveness.
“One of the most important goals to us is to encourage our fellow citizens to collect waste separately so as to save resources and funding for us, for our children and households. I hope we will all embrace this idea so that we can achieve tangible results and manage to secure a happier and healthier environment for our children,” said Mayor of Kyustendil Petar Paunov.
