On the 18th of October, at an official ceremony that began at 11am at The Social Teahouse in Varna, Mr. Todor Bourgoudjiev, Executive Director of ECOPACK Bulgaria, presented the library of the first social entrepreneurship project in our seaside capital with new books.
ECOPACK Bulgaria donated more than 100 books for the children and young people visiting the Teahouse as a result of the “Old Paper for New Book” campaign. The campaign is targeted at the youngest children and their parents, and aims to foster recycling habits at home and an appreciation of books from a very early age. All the children who, together with their parents, hand old paper over for recycling, receive a new children’s book of their choosing, as well as an unforgettable children’s celebration.
For the first time since the launch of the initiative, ECOPACK Bulgaria decided to use the funds raised from the recycled paper to publish and donate new books. “This is how we came to print 4,500 copies of the children’s book “You Can Save the Planet”, which we handed out to the children in Sofia, Russe, and Haskovo, and to the young people from the Teahouse here in Varna, we give these 100 books that represent the result of the efforts of all the children who came and handed over paper for recycling,” said Mr. Bourgoudjiev. On September 17th this year, the campaign was joined by 1,300 children from Varna, more than 2,500 books were given away, 7 tons of paper were collected, and 91 trees saved from felling.
The event was attended by Mr. Bazitov, Deputy Mayor of Varna, and representatives of the Education and Social Work directorates, which supported the project. “We hope that the number of participants in the “Old Paper for New Book” campaign will increase next year, that we will collect and recycle even more paper so that there will be more new books for the children!” was the wish of the campaign organizers ECOPACK Bulgaria and Greenwich Book Center.
