As confirmed by Decree (РД-315/15.05.2017) of the Minister of the Environment and Water Neno Dimov, the recycling and recovery targets of the members of ECOPACK for 2016 have been met. For the thirteenth consecutive year, ECOPACK reasserted its position as leader among the packaging waste recovery organizations in Bulgaria, with its market share of 42.4%.
In 2016, the ECOPACK member companies reported 155,978 tons of packaging released on the market. Of those, ECOPACK handed over 100,117.47 t of packaging waste for recycling and recovery, of which 47,746.38 t of paper, 23,795.52 t of glass, 16,874.08 t of plastic, 4,806.94 t of metal, and 6,851.77 t of timber.
The total amount recycled constitutes 64.19% of the reported amount of packaging, with 60% required by law.
In 2016, ECOPACK managed the separate waste collection systems in 64 municipalities, covering a total population of 2,630,718, serviced by 14,539 containers with a total volume of 20,206,500 liters.
The number of clients whose recycling obligations were met by ECOPACK was 1,211.
Even in 2016 ECOPACK continued investing in the modernization of the separate collection systems, adopting new technological solutions and European practices. ECOPACK Bulgaria invested BGN 2.5 million in the country’s first-of-its-kind glass color-sorting facility, with the capacity to process 100 t of glass packaging a day. The process of optimization of operations related to packaging waste continued, as well as the replacement of hinged-lid containers with igloo-type ones.
With the packaging waste collected and handed over for recycling in 2016, ECOPACK has:

- 317 m kWh of electric power;
- 1.517 billion liters of drinking water;
- 153,114 barrels of petroleum
• reduced the volume of landfill waste by more than 190,986 cub m.
