Bourgas wins the competition “ECOPACK’s Greenest Municipality” with first-of-its-kind project for electronic reporting of separately collected waste.
Bourgas Municipality won ECOPACK’s Greenest Municipality Award for 2016 with a project for electronic reporting of separately collected waste. The system is the first of its kind in Bulgaria and aims to reward participating citizens with specific bonuses or the possibility to reduce their waste tax.
In 2016, the competition included 19 participating municipalities divided into three categories – small, medium-sized, and large municipality. The projects were expected to meet criteria such as sustainability, innovation, best practice, and effectiveness.
The Bourgas Municipality project “Be Eco-Friendly – Save by Collecting Waste Separately” won BGN 25,000 in the large-municipality category (population over 100,000) with a score of 350 out of maximum 353 points.
Part of this unique project is an already working network of nine mobile centers for separate household waste collection, which builds on the three color-coded containers system. The mobile centers collect paper, glass, plastic and metal, as well as waste electrical and electronic equipment, hazardous household waste, batteries, luminescent lamps, textile waste, etc.
By data of the operator, Chistota Eko municipal enterprise, 6 to 10 people visit each center per day. In one month, up to 2,000 people hand over their waste at the nine collection points.
“The introduction of an electronic reporting system and the envisioned bonus programs will provide strong motivation to recycle as much as possible at home,” said Mayor of Bourgas Municipality Dimitar Nikolov.
“Bourgas has once again proven to be one of the greenest municipalities in Bulgaria, with an innovative approach in the battle against waste, with concern for nature and the good of the citizens,” said ECOPACK Bulgaria Executive Director Todor Bourgoudjiev when presenting the award.
ECOPACK’s Greenest Municipality was held for the second consecutive year among the partner municipalities with which ECOPACK Bulgaria has concluded contracts for maintenance of the separate packaging waste collection systems. The competition was created to assist the municipalities in their battle with waste and its management.
The goal is to award the best eco projects, as well as to encourage active green policies on the part of the municipalities, to improve the efficiency of the systems for separate waste collection, and to inform and educate the public about its uses and benefits.
A new edition of the competition ECOPACK’S Greenest Municipality will be launched in March 2017. It will be open to all partner municipalities.
Application conditions will be published on the competition website in March:
