Activity Report 2006
In 2006 the members of the organized by ECOPACK collective system for packaging waste recovery became 875 in total. The overall quantitative recovery and recycling target set in the legislation for 2006 is 35%. This year for the first time specific targets by material were introduced as well: plastic - 8%, glass - 26%, paper - 15% and metals - 15%.
By 31.12.2006 the total packaging amount put on the market by the members of ECOPACK BULGARIA is 123 044 tons. Company has collected and recycled 49 948 tons of packaging waste, which is overall target achievement in the amount of 40.59%. The achievement of the specific targets by material is the following: plastic - 16.27%, glass - 49.16%, paper - 73.94% and metals - 65.87%.

2.2. Separate packaging waste collection from ECOPACK member-companies
ECOPACK has developed a program "Packaging Waste Collection in Colored Containers at the premises of the member-companies". The aim is to promote separate packaging waste collection among the personnel and the customers of the member-companies as well as to minimise the amount of recyclables going in the general waste stream. First stage of the program covered companies located in Sofia and after results evaluation, by the end of 2006, it will be extended to cover more ECOPACK municipalities. Plans are by the end of 2006 to provide more than 100 containers.
2.3. Separate packaging waste collection on the territory of the USA Embassy
ECOPACK is the first packaging recovery organization implementing separate waste collection on the territory of a foreign mission in Bulgaria. Project started in June 2006. Containers of 120 l and 240 l are situated in the buildings. Attendance personnel gather the waste from these bins and drop it in the respective bigger containers for separate collection outside the Embassy that are serviced by ECOPACK subcontractor.
2.4. Packaging waste collection via collection centers
In 2006 ECOPACK continued the realization of the project for renovation of the packaging waste delivery centers. The organization considers that the finding of a solution compatible with the existing systems for waste collection is a necessary condition for the successful activity as a recovery organization. There are 66 renovated centres by 31.10.2006.
2.5. Separate packaging waste collection in schools
ECOPACK launched several projects for separate waste collection in the schools aiming at education and building up environmental awareness and habits among the pupils in Sofia, Bourgas and Smolyan.
2.6. Separate packaging waste collection in Business Park Sofia
Project started in October 2006 on the territory of Business Park Sofia covering 22 administrative buildings, 198 company offices and more than 5000 employees.
3. Measures for informing and attracting consumers to practice the separate packaging waste collection
ECOPACK translated in Bulgarian and provided on its website the information brochure entitled Environmental Education - the path to Sustainable Development. The brochure points out that only awareness building and understanding of the complex correlations of personal behavior and environmental problems will be able to find solutions on the long run. Moreover it shows examples what PRO EUROPE members are already doing together with young people, schools and other institutions.
