1. Achievement of recovery and recycling targets

In 2005 the members of the organized by ECOPACK BULGARIA collective system for packaging waste recovery reached 495 companies - producers and importers of packed goods. The overall quantitative recovery and recycling target set in the legislation for 2005 is 25%.

By 31.12.2005 the total packaging amount put on the market by the members of ECOPACK BULGARIA is 94 086 tons. In execution of its obligations the Company has collected and recycled 25 728 tons of packaging waste, which is target achievement in the amount of 27,3%.

2. Covering population in systems for separate packaging waste collection

In March 2005 proposals for organizing separate packaging waste collection have been sent to all bigger municipalities in the country: Plovdiv, Varna, Bourgas, Vratsa, Blagoevgrad, Dobrich, Kazanlak, Kurdzali, Kjustendil, Montana, Shoumen, Targovishte, Gabrovo, Veliko Tarnovo, Rousse, Pleven, Haskovo, Stara Zagora and Yambol. For the time being there is no feedback.

By the end of October 2005 ECOPACK BULGARIA has signed contracts for organizing separate packaging waste collection with the municipalities of Sofia, Smolyan, Razgrad, Bansko, Hisar, Pravets. Signing such contracts with the municipalities of Pazardzik and Dupnitsa are in progress. The negotiation process with the municipalities of Stara Zagora, Targovishte and Blagoevgrad are ongoing.

Implementing the program submitted in 2004 ECOPACK BULGARIA commissioned a year-round research of the morphological composition of the packaging waste in Razgrad to be made in 2005-2006. During the research of the 4 seasons the waste will be investigated by type of packaging waste in the total solid waste flow. Every seasonal monitoring should be made for seven days. ECOPACK BULGARIA has developed a methodology of the research to guarantee obtaining of representative results, taking into account also the seasonal changes in the quantities and composition of the packaging waste.

2.1. Projects with containers

The elements of the implemented scheme for separate packaging waste collection are colored containers - with volume 1.5 cub.m (type IGLOO) or volume 240 l - that depending on the type of the waste material are: blue container (paper packaging), yellow container (plastic and metal packaging) and green container (glass packaging).

2.3. Projects for renovation of centers for packaging waste collection

In 2005 ECOPACK BULGARIA launched a Project for renovation of centers for packaging waste delivery. The renovation consists of extensive repairs of the buildings or replacement of the existing structures with new ones. Future development of the project is related to promotion of the renovated centers as well as extension of the network to cover more settlements in the country.

3. Measures for packaging waste prevention

ECOPACK BULGARIA together with PRO EUROPE finances the publishing of a brochure entitled „Effective packaging - Effective prevention". 22 different countries unified their efforts to establish a national system for collection and recovery of packaging waste under the sigh of „The Green Dot".

The topic of packaging waste prevention was part of the agenda of the seminars organized by ECOPACK BULGARIA for its members, including:

• Providing information about good practices in development and implementation of company plans for waste prevention;

• Standards promotion: BDS EN 13427, BDS EN 13428, BDS EN 13429, BDS EN 13430, BDS EN 13431, BDS EN 13432.

4. Measures for informing and attracting consumers to practice the separate packaging waste collection

In 2005 the following information campaigns and events were held:

• Advertising campaigns in newspapers and magazines promoting the activities of ECOPACK BULGARIA as a packaging recovery organization

• Advertising campaign in radio stations introducing the activities of ECOPACK BULGARIA and promoting the trade mark of the organization
