400 Children from Shumen Become Fans of Packaging Recycling

ECOPACK Bulgaria and Shumen Municipality organized a special children’s event
400 children from Shumen kindergartens and primary schools made friends with Hartoyad (paper eater), Plastoyad (plastic eater), and Stukloyad (glass eater) – the characters from the puppet show(“A Tale of Brave Little Empty-Bellied Heroes”) with which ECOPACK Bulgaria teaches kids to collect packaging waste separately.
During the action-packed event organized in the park between the municipality building and the Regional Library, the children demonstrated what they had learned from the educational play. Together with the puppet characters, they threw out different kinds of waste in the ECOPACK color-coded containers. “Paper goes into the blue container, plastic and metal – into the yellow one, and glass – in the green one,” five-year old Victoria explained enthusiastically.
Teachers and educators who took part in the event shared that environmental education is an important part of the curriculum, which is why they appreciated and looked forward to each new ECOPACK initiative.
After the show, the children danced together with the characters. Each young participant received as a gift a magnet and a comic coloring book with the story of the three puppet characters.
First-graders took part in a reading contest and competed to be the fastest and smooth reader of the story in the comic book.
The spring tour of the theater troupe visited 7 cities. Besides Shumen, between April 16th and May 3rd, the show visited Silistra, Dulovo, Hissarya, Pazardzhik, Aitos, and Karnobat. The characters are featured in the Feed Me Separately! Campaign and are well-known from the ECOPACK containers.
The puppet show was first staged in 2015 and since then the actors from the Fairy Tale Theater have taught more than 4,600 children aged 4-8, from 21 cities in this country, to collect waste separately. Once they get to know the story of the three quirky characters, kids become eager ambassadors of packaging recycling and start teaching their parents, as well.
